Ever wondered what kind of battery is used on watches, and why they are so small and flat that they seem very different from the typical dry cells that you use? These silver-colored batteries that need to be removed and installed with a screw are often referred to as a watch battery, a button cell, or a coin cell. They are called as such because they are very small and compact, and they look like a silver button or a silver coin. Even though they are small compared to all other types of batteries, coin cells have long life. Each of the batteries have different electrochemical systems and they are coded according to charge or electrode, and dimension. The batteries are either positively charged with Manganese Oxide, Silver oxide, Oxygen, Carbon monofluoride, or Copper oxide. And they are negatively charged with either zinc or lithium.
One of the most commonly used among these batteries is the cr2032 lithium battery, a high energy coin cell with continuous voltage supply. It is 20 mm in diameter, and 3.2 mm in height. The metal case of this battery is its positive terminal and its cap is the negative terminal. It is coded CR because its cathode material is Manganese oxide while its anode material is Lithium. The cr2302 lithium battery has a nominal voltage of 3 volts, the highest nominal voltage that coin cells can possibly have. And that is why it lasts longer and is more powerful compared to Silver oxide batteries (coded SR) with 1.55 volts, and also the Alakaline batteries (coded LR) with only 1.5 volts. This type of battery has no final letter on the package code, that’s because the electrolyte that it uses is organic.
The cr2032 lithium battery has a long shelf life which is good for storage capacities and back-up or replacement purposes. This battery is used not just for wrist watches as commonly known, but also for other compact electronic products such as cameras, calculators, games, battery-operated children’s books, computer clock, and some remote controls. The cr2032 lithium battery is also known as DL2032, KCR2032, ECR2032, BR2032, LM2032, L14, and other name codes. The battery uses non-aqueous electrolyte so leakage is less of a worry for the user. It can also stand a wide range of temperature and it may last up to 5 years for normal usage. Like other batteries, the cr2032 lithium batteries are also recyclable. But they are readily recycled like lead-acid automotive batteries because of the value and level of toxicity of the chemicals that they contain.
